Auto A/C Repair Service in St. Louis, MO & Collinsville, IL
Your car's A/C system works a lot like your refrigerator at home. Both are a closed loop in which Freon refrigerant is compressed from a gas down to a liquid, via a mechanical compressor. The liquid then provides cooling by evaporating, condensing and running through the compressor again in a cycle of compression and expansion.
Your refrigerator, however, isn't subject to vibration, extreme heat and the other conditions that an automotive A/C system experiences. That's why it's important to keep your car's A/C maintained.
Since the seals, hoses and other components of an automotive A/C system are slightly porous, even a late model vehicle can lose as much as five percent of its refrigerant over a year's time. Figure in the electronic switches, relays and other components of an A/C system, and it's pretty clear that they do need maintenance.
These are all trouble signs of an A/C system that needs maintenance:
- Air from A/C is barely cooler than outside ambient air temperature
- Musty or "dirty socks" smell from vents
- A/C only blows cold while moving, not while stopped or parked
- Regular metallic clicking sound while engine is running, as A/C compressor's clutch cycles on and off
Many times, nothing more is needed than a recharge of the A/C system with Freon...but running a system with low Freon can cause damage. Freon contains a light oil, which keeps the compressor lubricated, and without it the compressor can seize or even come apart, sending shards of metal through the system.
