We had a new customer this week. His SUV was towed in because the wheels kept locking up while he was driving. He thought his brakes were locking up. We got the car in the shop and performed a complete examination. We found evidence that the four wheel drive transfer case had been leaking fluid for quite a while (see the photo). When the fluid finally all leaked out, the transfer case began locking up. The metal components inside were damaged beyond repair. We were able to find a used transfer case, but it still cost about $700.
There is a lesson to be learned here. Our shops perform a visual inspection on every vehicle we service. Our technicians would have pointed out the leak, which could have been repaired for around $100.
We have a great respect for Benjamin Franklin, one of our country's founding fathers, who is credited with originating the phrase: "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."
