What You Need To Know About Oil Changes in St. Louis, MO & Collinsville, IL
Chances are you’ve heard it for as long as you’ve owned a car…”regular oil changes are the single best way to get the most miles out of your vehicle”
It was true 40 years ago, and it’s still true today. The moving parts in your engine all require a thin film of motor oil to cut friction and dissipate heat. If you were to run the engine without oil, within a couple of minutes it would overheat to a point where the parts would physically weld to each other, seizing the engine permanently.
Older mineral-based motor oils, refined from crude oil, required an oil change every 3,000 miles. Newer formulations include detergents and dispersants that suspend impurities in the oil so it can be trapped by the oil filter as oil circulates through the engine. As a result, newer conventional oils can go for a 5,000-mile interval in between oil changes.
Older vehicles with more than 100,000 miles on the odometer, can use a special high-mileage synthetic blend formulation. High-mileage motor oil contains friction modifiers that can help compensate for the looser tolerances of a worn engine, as well as seal conditioners that will swell seals and gaskets that may have dried out and shrunk, causing leaks.
Manufacturers now recommend synthetic motor oil for all new vehicles, and for good reason. Full synthetic oil outperforms older oil formulations in every aspect of engine protection. Synthetic oil is more stable at the molecular level; it won’t thin out in hot weather, and it won’t thicken and become viscous in cold temperatures. This is especially important at startup, when oil needs to quickly get to the engine’s top end assemblies, such as the cam, bearings, and valve train. Synthetic oil is considerably more expensive per quart, but that’s balanced out somewhat by a 10-12,000 mile oil change interval (remember to check your owner’s manual for manufacturer’s recommendations).
In the end, the choice is yours. You can spend a little money now, or a whole lot of money later for an engine rebuild. Not much of a choice, though, is it? Make an appointment with us at Master Auto Repair for your next oil change!
