Get the Most Miles out of Your Vehicle

posted on

Years ago, you would often find cars in the scrapyard with 100,000 miles. They would have engines with burned oil, rusted-out bodies, and trashed interiors. Today’s cars are just getting broken in at 100,000 miles! At Master Auto Repair and Tire, we often service vehicles with 200,000 miles or more...with many more Oil Change Preventative Maintenace Missourigood miles left to go! Your car won’t make it that long without a little TLC, though. Regular preventative maintenance is the key to making sure you get the most miles out of your vehicle. Your car is a big investment, treat it like one with these tips:

  • Make sure you change your oil regularly. If you have been considering switching to synthetic motor oil, the time is now. Synthetic oil offers better engine protection regardless of the number of miles on your vehicle. With synthetic oil, you can also go longer between oil changes than with conventional motor oil...making it that much easier to keep up with your regular oil changes. If you do not want to go synthetic yet..no worries! There are many types of conventional oils that will keep your engine running smooth. You’ll just need to get your oil changed a bit more frequently.
  • Wash and wax your vehicle regularly. Aside from making your car look good, regular washing and waxing will help protect the finish from grit and prevent chips and dings from happening… which can often be a starting point for body rust
  • Check your fluids regularly. This includes brake fluid, coolant, transmission fluid, and power steering fluid. Coolant condition can easily be checked with a hygrometer and should be flushed if it shows signs of breakdown or is carrying particles and contaminants. If transmission fluid is darker than magenta and has a burned smell to it, it should be changed right away.
  • Check the belts and hoses. These items can fall apart, but in newer cars it’s much harder to see them undergoing wear and tear. Your mechanic will be happy to check these items for you during a regular service.

These days, people are hanging onto their cars much longer. The average life of a vehicle on the road in the United States can be 14 years or more! Without proper maintenance, however, your car could very well end up in the scrapyard much sooner. Make an appointment with us at Master Auto Repair so we can get you on a preventative maintenance schedule...your vehicle will appreciate it!
