Driving in the Summer Heat

posted on

The folks at Master Auto Repair know that summer driving can be rough on you and your car.  As the dog days of summer bring the heat, here are some tips and services that can help you and your car keep your cool.summer-tires-st-louis-mo

1.  Have the Air Conditioning Serviced - Air conditioning systems slowly degrade over time, losing Freon, the magic gas inside the system that makes things cold, and accumulating moisture in the ventilation system.  If you want to keep your cool when driving, have your AC System serviced by Master Auto Repair to make sure it is working to its maximum capacity. Then clean the system of debris, replace fresh air filters and use a vent cleaning aerosol to kill smelly mold, mildew and bacteria to give your car back that new car fresh air smell.

2. Change the Oil - Heat is the enemy of your oil, and the hotter it is outside the hotter your engine oil will be.  If you drive a lot of stop and go miles or live in the mid-west, summer is very rough on your oil.  Once your oil breaks down engine damage is not far behind and an engine failure is no way to keep your cool.  Check your oil often to make sure the level and quality of the oil.  Dark brown or smelly oil needs to be replaced.  Have Master Auto Repair change your oil at least every three months or 3,000 miles in the summer and consider asking them to upgrade you to a fully synthetic oil which protects better and resists heat damage more readily than its natural oil cousins.

3. Check the Tires - The hot asphalt can damage your tires to the point of failure, especially if they are underinflated.  Tires with low pressure get hotter faster than a properly inflated tire.  Hot treads can separate, causing a dangerous catastrophic tire failure.  Check your tire pressure weekly and keep them inflated to the specs provided in your owner's manual or on the tag inside your driver door.  Keeping your tires cool will help you keep yours too.

4.  Flush and Fill Coolant - Today's engines cool very efficiently, but they are also much more susceptible to major damage from overheating.  Just a few minutes of overheating in today's tightly tolerated engines can cause thousands of dollars in engine damage and weeks out of service.  Before Master Auto Repair has to babysit your vehicle for weeks, take some quick preventive steps by having them check your coolant system, drain it, flush it and fill it with fresh coolant.

The good folks at Master Auto Repair want you to have the best summer possible, and that means helping you keep it cool all season long.  Call or swing by one of their five convenient locations and let them help you take the heat out of summer.
