The design of the windshield wiper hasn’t changed for a long, long time…it’s still a strip of rubber that’s pressed against the windshield by a spring arm, and it still squeegees water off the glass when it moves back and forth.
The rubber/silicone used for wiper blades may have improved over the years, but it’s still true that even the best wipers are only good for about a year’s time. Normal wear, the sun’s UV rays, and the elements take their toll on windshield wiper material.
If you’re starting to notice chipping, cracking or drying out on your windshield wipers, or if they’re shedding entire strips of rubber, it’s definitely time for a change. Or…if you notice smudges and smears in the field of vision when it’s raining and your wipers are on, you know it’s time to change your wipers.
One more rule of thumb might just be to change your wipers once a year, regardless of condition.
