Every vehicle should have an emergency kit, and summer emergency kits might be a bit different.

We put our minds to it and came up with this short list. Granted, we know that space is a premium in many vehicles, so you may need to amend this list somewhat…

• Water: a gallon of distilled water, and one bottle per person
• Protein-rich snacks
• Sunblock
• Phone charger or power bank
• First aid kit
• Flashlight: a hand-cranked one is ideal, possibly with a built-in radio
• Pocket knife (sharp!)
• Duct tape
• Flares or reflectors
• Tow strap
• Basic tools: screwdriver, vise grips, pliers, perhaps a Leatherman-style multi-tool
• Tire sealant or cigarette lighter-powered air compressor
• Gloves
• Games and puzzles to keep the kids occupied

Getting stranded by the side of the road is never fun, but you’re better off being prepared if it ever happens. Besides, you could end up in a traffic jam that takes hours to clear, or   you might even have occasion to help out another driver who’s stranded.
